Does CBD Get You High?

The short answer is no - CBD does not get you high, it’s a naturally non-psychoactive compound that doesn’t cause the user to feel a euphoric, or “high” sensation like THC does... But keep reading for the full story!

Understanding the Difference Between CBD and THC
CBD and THC are both cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, alongside more than 100 other active compounds. On its own, CBD doesn’t get you high, although some users do report that they feel more relaxed after taking it. THC, on the other hand, is the psychoactive compound in marijuana that causes psychoactive effects.

THC is a CB1 agonist, meaning that it activates the CB1 receptors in your body’s endocannabinoid system. When these receptors are activated, blood floods your brain’s frontal cortex, increasing activity. This causes a dissociative effect. THC also activates your brain’s reward system, instructing it to increase dopamine levels, causing a euphoric high. Combined, these two actions create the buzz marijuana gives users.

CBD, on the other hand, is a CB1 blocker. It prevents activation of the CB1 receptors so CBD doesn’t get you high. It acts primarily on other receptors that regulate a host of body functions but leaves your frontal cortex and dopamine levels untouched. For many people, this means they get the potential benefits of cannabis in their daily lives without the drawbacks of feeling intoxicated or potentially failing drug tests.

Hemp vs. Marijuana
It’s important to understand that marijuana and hemp aren’t the same. Hemp contains minuscule amounts of THC—less than 0.3%. This is in contrast to marijuana which can have THC concentrations more than 100-times higher.

CBD can be extracted from the marijuana plant, but that means it’s also going to contain THC. However, CBD that’s extracted from the hemp plant doesn’t contain significant amounts of THC, so you won’t feel high after taking it.

What Does CBD Do?
Just because CBD can’t get you high doesn’t mean that it can’t be a useful supplement. So, while the answer to “Does CBD get you high?” is no when compared to THC, it can still potentially help you meet your wellness goals. CBD interacts with other receptors in your endocannabinoid system, which then sends signals to your body’s endocrine, nervous, circulatory, and other systems. This stimulates the release of hormones and neurotransmitters that can cause physiological actions in your body. It is these changes that produce the results that so many CBD users attest to.
